A WIRELESS ROUTER AND A WIRELESS ACCESS POINT ARE BOTH DEVICES THAT ALLOW WIRELESS DEVICES TO CONNECT TO A WIRED NETWORK. HOWEVER, THEY HAVE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND CAPABILITIES.
A
WIRELESS ROUTER IS A DEVICE THAT CONNECTS A WIRED
NETWORK TO THE INTERNET AND ALSO PROVIDES WIRELESS ACCESS TO THAT NETWORK.
IT HAS A BUILT-IN MODEM, FIREWALL, AND DHCP SERVER. THIS
MEANS THAT IT CAN CONNECT TO YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP),
IT PROTECT YOUR NETWORK FROM UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS, AND ASSIGN
IP ADDRESSES TO THE DEVICES ON YOUR NETWORK.
A
WIRELESS ACCESS POINT (AP) IS A DEVICE THAT ONLY PROVIDES
WIRELESS ACCESS TO A WIRED NETWORK. IT DOES NOT HAVE A BUILT-IN MODEM OR
FIREWALL.
THIS MEANS THAT YOU NEED TO CONNECT IT TO A ROUTER OR OTHER DEVICE THAT HAS A MODEM AND FIREWALL IN ORDER TO USE IT.
